Jim and Judy Etling

The Etlings farm and ranch near Newcastle, Texas on approximately 2000 acres.  Son Bryan owns a ranch nearby and helps them with their operation.  Jim uses Kelpies exclusively to gather and move their cattle.  Sometimes horseback, with a 4-wheeler or pickup.  He's found that the dogs do as much as 2 men on horseback.  Judy enjoys ranch life as a homemaker, artist and goat herder.  She is active in the First Baptist Church in Newcastle.

Cable Network Animal Planet K-9 to 5 featured Jim and Kelpie, Tuff and Judy and the Guardian Dogs on 2 different segments.

Our Working Kelpies

Buchanan US Euroka  "Roy" is a dog with true power, heading and heeling cattle while getting up baby goats pushing them gently along with his nose.  Their first Kelpie, he came to the Etlings at 6 weeks of age.  Though passed on, he will always be the Etling's first and foremost Kelpie.

Rogue Tuff  (Faught's Tex x *McNally's Pam)  Tuff is their top dog though slowing down a bit at age 10.  He has been a very dependable dog. A good sized, athletic black and tan dog with beautiful working style. Tuff has head bite. Jim has trialed with him successfully.

Kaki's Mac  (Buchanan US Euroka x Sagebrush's Kaki)  Mac, red and tan male, is used in tandem with Tuff when gathering cattle.  Mac is fast as lightning, an enthusiastic worker and has an abundance of endurance.

Riggee Didge Tex  (Rogue Tuff x Barnes' Shelli)  A black and tan male at 15 months is showing a lot of promise on cattle.

In the wings are 10 month old Etling's Roy (Little Roy) a red and tan son of Mac and grandson of Roy and 4 month old Etling's Clay (*Old Station Greg x Outback Lil) a red and tan female who seems very forceful and has a lot of confidence.

The Etlings offer pups occasionally to working stock dog homes.  Though not all of the pups make cattle dogs, their breeding program is based on cattle working lines.  They also offer stud service.

Our Boer Goat Crosses

Judy maintains a small herd of 120 does which she obtained for weed and brush control.  The goats have worked very well for them in controlling Annual Broomweed, Texas Thistle, briars and many other pasture weeds.  The goats also eat some Western Ragweed and Mustard and keep the Oaks trimmed.

Deciding to more meat on the kid crop, Judy used fullblood Boer bucks. Her herd now ranges from 0% to 15/16% Boer.  The results have been very successful whether thekids (weighing 10 - 15 pounds more) are sold at market or for 4-H meat goat projects.  She also sells young bred yearling does.

Dogs also enter into the care and management of the goats.  Judy uses the Kelpies for gathering and moving the herd and Guardian Dogs (Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherd crosses) to protect the herd from coyotes and other predators.  She feels her goat project would be a complete failure without the dogs.

Our Feeder Cattle

The Etlings run 1200 to 1500 yearling steers annually.  They like to buy lightweight cattle under 300 pounds.  The cattle are kept for several months upwards to a year.  They are then sold or sent to a feedlot to finish.  Bryan, their son is in charge of keeping the steers healthy when they first arrive.

Our Wheat and Hay

Red Top Cane, Coastal Bermuda Grass hay and winter wheat are raised for feed.  The hay and wheat pasture supplement the native and improved grass pastures for their cattle.
